Professor Jang So-won of Seoul National University Appointed as Director of the National Institute of the Korean Language

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism appointed Professor Jang Jang-so-won of Seoul National University as the 12th Director of the National Institute of the Korean Language on the 8th. The term is three years, until October 2024.

New Director Jang is an expert in Korean linguistics, Korean language education, and language policy. He has authored numerous papers such as "Classification of Types of Korean Responses and Pragmatic Effects," "Reading Korean Culture for Foreigners," and "Results of the Evaluation of Standard Language Norm Influence." He gained respect in the fields of Korean linguistics and Korean language education through activities such as serving as president of the Korean Linguistic Society. Last year, he co-chaired the World Korean Language Competition, promoting the value of Hangeul and the Korean language worldwide. He is also evaluated to have extensive organizational management and administrative experience through operating affiliated institutions within the university. Minister Hwang Hee of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, "I hope he will lead the National Institute of the Korean Language solidly, raise the status of the Korean language, and contribute to creating a proper language culture."
