The Corruption Investigation Office Transfers the Case of Lee Jae-myung's Alleged Preferential Treatment in Daejang-dong Development to the Prosecutors
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (HCIC) has handed over the case involving Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung, who was accused in connection with the 'Daejang-dong Development Project Favoritism Allegation,' to the prosecution.
On the 7th, the HCIC announced that it transferred the case in which the National Association of Demolition Residents (Jeoncheolhyeop) accused Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung regarding the Daejang-dong allegations to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
An HCIC official explained, "Since this accusation concerns an incident that occurred while Governor Lee was serving as the mayor of Seongnam, it was judged not to fall under the crimes specified in Article 2, Clause 3 of the HCIC Act."
Article 2, Clause 3 of the HCIC Act defines crimes committed by high-ranking officials 'while in office' by themselves or their family members as 'high-ranking officials' crimes.' Since the mayor of Seongnam is not considered a high-ranking official under the HCIC Act, the HCIC determined that the case is not subject to investigation.
Previously, on the 24th of last month, Jeoncheolhyeop filed a complaint against Governor Lee on charges of breach of trust under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. The HCIC conducted an investigation of the complainant on the 5th regarding this case.
