Mackerel, Shrimp, and Squid Also Available for Online Order... Market Kurly Offers Seafood Discounts Until the 14th
Seafood Sales Up 50% Year-on-Year Since the Beginning of This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] It has been found that seafood, which was previously purchased by directly checking freshness in person, is now increasingly being bought online following the spread of COVID-19. Not only preferred seafood such as salmon and abalone, but also everyday commonly consumed seafood like mackerel, shrimp, and squid have seen an increase in online early morning delivery orders.
According to Market Kurly on the 7th, seafood sales from January to September this year increased by 50% compared to the same period last year. In particular, the sales volume of squid, which Koreans favor, rose by 89% year-on-year, shrimp by 87%, and mackerel by 39%, showing high sales growth for seafood that is frequently purchased daily. On the other hand, sales of Market Kurly’s representative seafood, salmon, increased by 34%, and abalone by 28%, which is somewhat lower compared to the growth rate of everyday seafood.
As of October, among the 793 seafood products sold on Market Kurly, the product group with the highest sales volume is fish, accounting for 26% of the total. Frozen mackerel processed into fillets (boneless) by removing the head, entrails, and bones ranked first in sales. Market Kurly’s analysis suggests that many customers choose this product because it is convenient to store in the freezer and use for braising or grilling. Last year during the same period, fresh salmon for sashimi ranked first in sales.
The single best-selling product was cleaned fresh shrimp meat, which is popular for use in various dishes such as fried rice, pasta, and gambas, with sales increasing by 87% compared to the same period last year. Squid, selected as the most favored seafood among Koreans, also showed a high sales increase of 89%. In particular, the seafood and shellfish categories, including shrimp and squid, are growing rapidly, making their sales proportion similar to that of fish within the total seafood sales.
Market Kurly is holding an 'Autumn Seafood Grand Festival' until the 21st, where same-day auction products are stocked and delivered to customers’ doorsteps through a cold chain. Over 110 seasonal seafood products are being sold at discounts of up to 40%. This event is part of the Korea Seafood Expo conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and also offers a 20% discount coupon that provides an additional discount of up to 10,000 KRW.
Jeoneo (gizzard shad), a representative autumn seafood, is being sold at up to 20% off. The most popular product is 'Iho’s' cleaned grilled jeoneo (300g), which has had its scales removed and been scored for grilling. Seasonal shrimp, such as 'Babeun’s' domestic whiteleg shrimp (around 700g, live), which have plumped up for the season, are being sold at up to 25% off, and autumn fresh flower crabs are discounted by 21%.
