Hyundai Department Store Wins Silver and Bronze Awards at '2021 Good Design (GD) Product Selection'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Hyundai Department Store announced on the 7th that its unmanned store 'Uncommon Store' operating at 'The Hyundai Seoul' and the 'Eco-friendly Fruit Carrier' made of paper each won the Silver Award (Minister of SMEs and Startups Award) and Bronze Award (Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award) respectively at the '2021 Good Design (GD) Product Selection' ceremony held on the 6th.
The '2021 Good Design (GD) Product Selection' is a system hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, which grants government certification symbols to products with excellent design. It has been held annually since 1985.
The Uncommon Store, which won the Silver Award, is an unmanned store that Hyundai Department Store introduced for the first time in the department store industry on the 6th floor of The Hyundai Seoul in February this year. In collaboration with interior design firm Akimosphere, it is designed as a 33㎡ (approximately 10 pyeong) lifestyle shop, selling over 200 products including fashion accessories, daily necessities, food and beverages, and goods. Customers enter the store by scanning a QR code using the 'Hyundai Food Hall To Home' mobile application (app), and after selecting products, they leave the store where payment is automatically processed within 3 minutes through pre-registered payment methods. More than 80% of all users are customers in their 20s and 30s, making it a popular unique experience store among the MZ generation.
The Eco-friendly Fruit Carrier, which won the Bronze Award, is a fruit basket made from recyclable paper fabric and is operated in the food halls of 16 stores nationwide, including the Apgujeong Main Store. Although made of paper material, it is designed to support weights up to approximately 25 kg, and unlike traditional rattan fruit baskets, it is characterized by easy separation and disposal.
In addition, other products selected as excellent design items this time include Hyundai Department Store's children's specialty store 'Petit Planet,' The Hyundai Seoul Culture Center 'CH1985,' The Hyundai Seoul Basement 1 Food Hall 'Tasty Seoul,' and goods made with Hyundai Department Store's mascot 'Heundi.'
A Hyundai Department Store official said, "As department stores evolve from simple sales spaces to lifestyle spaces that share everyday life with customers, design has also established itself as a means to provide value to customers," adding, "We will continue to strive to provide differentiated value unique to Hyundai Department Store to our customers."
