Naju City and Mokpo National University Join Hands to Create a Historical and Cultural City
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) has begun establishing a cooperative system with Mokpo National University to create a systematic roadmap for the "Historical and Cultural City Development" project, which is being promoted as a leading policy task in connection with the restoration of Mahan history.
On the 6th, the city announced that it signed a business agreement with Mokpo National University (President Park Min-seo) for research and cooperation on "Developing Naju as a Historical and Cultural City Centered on the Yeongsan River."
About 10 officials from both institutions attended the agreement ceremony held at the city hall's Ihwa Room, including Mayor Kang In-gyu, President Park Min-seo, and Kang Bong-ryong, Director of the Honam Cultural Contents Research Institute.
The two institutions will promote ▲ research and program development to enhance the city's domestic and international status ▲ comprehensive academic research and policy discovery on historical and cultural resources ▲ exchange of human and material resources for the development of the historical and cultural city ▲ discovery of city administration and policies, and securing budgets to reflect central government and Jeollanam-do policies.
In particular, they agreed to focus on academic research and policy development to reflect on the serious ecological and cultural distortions and practices that have regarded the river as merely a development and utilization target, and to reexamine the value of the river as the source of life and the cradle of civilization.
Mokpo National University plans to concentrate the capabilities of professors and researchers from various fields, centered on the Honam Cultural Contents Research Institute (Director Kang Bong-ryong), a subordinate organization that has shown special interest in the Yeongsan River's historical, cultural, and ecological assets, to focus on convergent research and policy alternatives regarding the Yeongsan River.
Mayor Kang In-gyu said, "Historically, the city has expanded its exchange with the world through the Yeongsan River, and we will do our best to grow into a city with international competitiveness beyond being the center of Honam, mediated again by the Yeongsan River. Through close cooperation with Mokpo National University, we will strive for academic research and policy development to revive the Yeongsan River and design a developed future."
President Park Min-seo said, "Through this agreement, we will redefine the value of the Yeongsan River, one of Korea's four major rivers and the lifeline of the southern region, and prepare sustainable policy alternatives. I hope to contribute to the development of Naju City, the Yeongsan River-centered city."
Meanwhile, the city is promoting the restoration of Mahan history and the development of a historical and cultural city as one of the five leading policy tasks to leap forward as the central city of Honam.
The Public-Private Joint Committee Mahan History Committee is also discovering and establishing detailed tasks related to the Yeongsan River historical and cultural city development project, such as "Restoration and maintenance of Naju Eupseong and Mokgwana" and "Construction of Yeongsan River Tower and restructuring of Yeongsanpo Riverside City."
