Japanese House of Representatives Elects Fumio Kishida as New Prime Minister
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] On the afternoon of the 4th, Fumio Kishida, the president of the Liberal Democratic Party, won a majority vote in the prime minister election held at the House of Representatives plenary session in Japan, supported by the majority party LDP and the coalition Komeito Party.
Shortly after, Kishida's election as prime minister will be confirmed in the vote held at the House of Councillors plenary session. Since the LDP and Komeito hold the majority in the House of Councillors, there is unlikely to be any surprise in Kishida being elected as prime minister.
New Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno announced the list of cabinet members after the vote, and the Kishida Cabinet will officially launch that afternoon.
