Jeju Province applied social distancing level 4 from August 18 but eased it to level 3 at midnight on the 23rd of last month.
During the October holiday period, the Jeju Tourism Association expected about 150,000 tourists to visit Jeju Island from the 1st to the 4th of the four-day holiday, and on that day, Hamdeok Beach was crowded with people enjoying the late heat by swimming in the sea and camping.
However, the social distancing level 4 banner was still left at Hamdeok Beach, which is famous for attracting many tourists, causing visitors to hurriedly search the internet for fear of possibly violating quarantine rules.
Under level 4 distancing, gatherings of up to 4 people are allowed before 6 p.m., and up to 2 people after 6 p.m.
Tourist A said, “The banner stated the period as ‘until further notice,’ so I had no choice but to search the internet again for fear of violating private gathering limits,” adding, “Although I thoroughly searched and understood the quarantine rules before visiting Jeju, seeing such a banner makes one wonder ‘Am I mistaken?’ and causes surprise.” He criticized Jeju Province’s complacent administration for leaving a banner that ended more than ten days ago still posted.
