Although he was trained in martial arts, he endured it. He did not want to use the Taekwondo skills he honed to strengthen his mind and body for hitting people.
Even as his face was injured by sudden punches while trying to avoid them, he bit his lip, deciding not to respond to violence with violence.
A Taekwondo dojang master in Busan claimed he was the victim of a random assault by a passerby in front of his students and released a vehicle black box video capturing the incident. The video was taken down after it spread.
According to the video and police reports, on the 30th, the master posted on the online community ‘Bobaedream’ that he was randomly assaulted by a man near his car parked in front of the Taekwondo dojang building around 4:10 p.m. the previous day, along with the vehicle black box footage of the incident.
At the time, the master was putting children who had finished Taekwondo class into the car to take them home. As he sat in the car, a man identified as Mr. A approached and pointed his finger, asking, “Are you the teacher? The master?”
Suddenly, Mr. A struck the back of the master’s head with his fist.
The master got out of the car and pushed Mr. A back in defense. When he asked why Mr. A was using violence and protested, Mr. A suddenly started hitting the master’s face.
The video shows Mr. A, dressed in black, repeatedly punching the master’s head, and the master trying to restrain the man by holding his body.
The master said, “At first, I was being hit mainly on the face, and I thought about fighting back, but I felt that a Taekwondo master should not hit people. Although I was angry, I bit my lip and endured it.”
He added, “If he had tried to harm the children as well, I would not have held back then.”
Not only the children in the car but also children on their way to the dojang and neighborhood residents witnessed this random assault.
The master immediately reported the incident to the police, and the situation ended when the police arrived at the scene. He comforted the frightened children and sent them home.
The master suffered facial bruises and a torn mouth. He is experiencing headaches from being hit in the face and mental distress from the violence that occurred in front of his students.
The master said that the children who saw the violence directly are also anxious. He felt heartbroken thinking about the children who must have wondered, “Why doesn’t the master hit back?” since he only took the blows without retaliating.
Under the video that was taken down from Bobaedream, numerous supportive comments remain.
Reading praises such as “You endured well” and “You showed the patience of Taekwondo,” the master found comfort, saying, “I kept thinking about it and cried, but I was consoled that it was the right thing not to retaliate and endure.”
That evening after the incident, the master received a phone call from a police officer.
The police said, “You kept your composure and endured well in front of the children watching. You did very well as a master, and if you had retaliated with violence, a more dangerous situation might have occurred.”
This was a consolation implying that if a powerful Taekwondo technique like a ‘dollyo chagi’ (roundhouse kick) had been used, it could have led to dangerous consequences in front of the children.
During the police investigation, it was revealed that Mr. A did not hold any grudge against the master or the children.
