GM Introduces New Software Platform 'Ultify'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] American automaker General Motors (GM) will introduce wireless software update capabilities for some vehicle models starting in 2023.
According to Bloomberg and other media on the 29th (local time), GM plans to apply a new software platform called 'UltiFi,' which features personalized options such as wireless software updates and child locks, to some internal combustion engine vehicles and electric models beginning in 2023.
Vehicles equipped with UltiFi will be able to update their performance and functions to the latest version via wireless communication without visiting a service center, and the wireless update data will be automatically saved in the cloud.
The updates will cover not only infotainment systems such as navigation and instrument panels but also brakes, steering wheels, airbags, and more. For example, services under consideration include recognizing the driver's face to unlock the vehicle and start the engine, as well as warning about icy road conditions.
GM did not specify which features will be included in UltiFi, but the company aims to increase the software services offered in vehicles as a new revenue source.
As part of this, GM is discussing launching a subscription service that allows monthly access to its semi-autonomous driving feature, Super Cruise.
Scott Miller, GM's Vice President of Vehicle Software Development, said, "GM will become an innovator in software platforms beyond hardware and discover new business models. UltiFi will be the first step in GM's software strategy."

Previously, GM introduced the connected car service 'OnStar,' but it did not achieve significant success in terms of revenue. OnStar connects to GM's OnStar call center when a button installed in the vehicle is pressed, providing services such as vehicle location and navigation, hotel or restaurant reservations, and stolen vehicle tracking.
