Police Agency and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to Conduct Intensive Crackdown on 'Illegal Two-Wheelers' for 3 Months Starting October
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 29th that they will conduct an intensive crackdown for three months starting next month on illegal motorcycles without license plates and violations of motorcycle traffic laws.
The number of fines issued for motorcycle traffic law violations reached 350,116 cases last year, and from January to August this year, it totaled 267,055 cases. Motorcycle accidents also increased from 20,898 cases in 2019 to 21,258 cases last year, and fatalities rose from 498 to 525. Due to the activation of delivery services caused by COVID-19, frequent traffic law violations and disorderly driving by some motorcycle riders have become problematic.
Accordingly, this intensive crackdown will target motorcycles violating the Motor Vehicle Management Act, such as those not registered for use, without license plates, damaged or covered plates, and illegal tuning (LED lights, mufflers, etc.), as well as motorcycles violating the Road Traffic Act, including riding on sidewalks, signal and instruction violations, and failure to protect pedestrians.
