Assemblyman Kim Young-sik: "Rapid Introduction of Semiconductor Equipment 'Radio Act' Amendment Passed"
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Amid the deepening semiconductor supply crisis, on the 28th, the partial amendment bill to the Radio Waves Act for the rapid installation of semiconductor equipment, which was primarily proposed by Kim Young-sik, a member of the People Power Party, passed the National Assembly. The amendment allows the application of radio wave equipment with only a completion report if multiple shielding facilities are installed, which is expected to significantly shorten the introduction period of semiconductor equipment.
Semiconductor equipment is classified as radio wave application equipment, and when installing or replacing it, it takes about 60 to 90 days until the equipment is actually operated. This has been pointed out as a factor that undermines competitiveness compared to the United States, Japan, and China, where there are no such regulations. Especially in the semiconductor industry, where processes advance every six months, delays in equipment introduction greatly affect semiconductor supply.
Currently, semiconductor equipment in South Korea is mainly used by four companies: Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, SK Hynix, and LG Display. The equipment operated by these four companies is estimated to be about 80,000 units.
However, since semiconductor equipment is installed in factories with multiple shielding, the possibility of interference in the air or effects on the human body is extremely low. Accordingly, the government also included the amendment to the Radio Waves Act in the regulatory rationalization plan for the rapid establishment of semiconductor equipment.
Assemblyman Kim Young-sik stated, “In the midst of the semiconductor supply crisis, the amendment to the Radio Waves Act enables the domestic semiconductor industry to introduce equipment more quickly,” and added, “I will continue to focus my legislative activities on rationalizing regulations that hinder national competitiveness.”
