GIST Academy to Hold September Breakfast Forum
Professor Choi Won-il Presents Methods for Meaningful Aging
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) Academy announced on the 28th that it held the September breakfast forum on the 27th at Oryong Hall, with about 40 representatives from major companies in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions attending, under the theme "Cognitive Psychology for a Happy Old Age: The Benefits of Aging."
At the forum, Professor Choi Won-il of the Department of Basic Education at GIST introduced interesting research results on how to healthily cope with cognitive and emotional changes due to aging and lead a meaningful life in old age, attracting great attention.
Professor Choi addressed several misconceptions about life in old age and emphasized walking as physical activity and reading as mental activity for a healthy and meaningful elderly life.
He also stressed that "there are more things you can do now for a meaningful old age than you might think," explaining that "having a psychologically healthy mindset is most important for this."
Professor Choi earned his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is conducting research related to what happens in the eyes and brain when humans think, understand language, and speak. Recently, he has expanded his interests to the interaction between humans, machines, and society.
Meanwhile, the GIST Academy breakfast forum is held on the last Monday of every month, providing opportunities for awareness innovation, technology transfer, and industry-academia cooperation through lectures by experts from various fields for academy alumni and executives of local companies.
