2133 Confirmed Cases by 9 PM... Record High Expected
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] After the Chuseok holiday, the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases surged, putting the quarantine authorities on high alert.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments on the 23rd, from midnight to 9 p.m. nationwide, 2,133 new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed. This is 530 more than the 1,603 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.
This is the first time in 44 days since August 10, when the 9 p.m. interim tally exceeded 2,000 cases with 2,021 cases. The 2,133 cases is the highest number recorded at this time of day.
Looking at the regions where cases were confirmed, 1,561 cases (73.2%) were in the metropolitan area, and 572 cases (26.8%) were in non-metropolitan areas.

Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0 a.m. on the 24th is expected to increase further to the 2,200?2,300 range, or possibly even higher. If it exceeds 2,221 cases (as of 0 a.m. on August 11), it will be the highest record since the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea.
