"6-Year-Old Dog Given Away Like Trash for 20,000 Won"... Netizens Outraged Over 'Haeundae Dog Abuse'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Seoyoung] News has emerged that a dog suspected to have been abused was rescued in the Haeundae area.
On the 13th, a post titled "Has anyone seen the dog abuse woman in Haeundae, Busan on September 12?" was uploaded on an online community board. The author began, "Last Sunday (the 12th) around 3:30 PM, while walking with my family along the Busan Haeundae beach, I saw a woman wearing a sky-blue dress walking a white Maltese dog."
The author recalled, "Upon closer look, the dog appeared to be elderly and seemed to have difficulty walking, possibly due to leg or back issues." They added, "At first, the dog would just sit down a few times, but as I kept watching, it seemed really hard for the dog to walk and it was barely keeping up." The author continued, "Then the owner pulled hard on the leash even when the dog fell. The dog was dragged along the cement ground. Even when waves on the sandy beach splashed over the dog, the owner just held the leash and dragged it along," explaining the situation.
At the time, the author said, "I kept following behind and said it was (animal) abuse, but the owner didn’t care even when I took photos," and reported the incident to the police. They added, "According to the police who later contacted me, the owner claimed to have adopted this dog, which was a stray six years ago," and "said that the dog was not thrown into the water but was made to swim because it liked water, and that pulling the leash was part of training," expressing anger at the owner’s attitude.
Later, on the 17th, the author posted again on the same community with the title "The abused dog in Haeundae has been rescued. Thank you so much." They said, "I received news today that the abused dog was rescued," and "I want to thank the brave person who rescued this dog. It was not an easy task, so I am very grateful for their courage."
They explained, "The rescued dog is the same one I saw," noting "the dog’s appearance is similar, and the bag the owner was carrying and the dog’s leash are identical." They also said, "While the police who arrived were unable to take any special action, the rescuer offered money and asked the owner to give the dog to them," and "the owner took 20,000 won and roughly handed over the dog they claimed to have raised for six years to the rescuer," they said.
The author appealed, "Abusing animals who cannot speak is something humans should never do," and urged, "If you see any suspicious signs of animal abuse, please do not just pass by but report it." They added, "The dog has been rescued by an angelic person and already looks happy. If anyone wants to lovingly care for the dog’s remaining life, please contact the rescuer," concluding, "I hope the dog meets a good owner and lives happily."
