[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yoodonggyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, visited the traditional markets in Mapo-gu on the 16th to celebrate the Chuseok holiday.
He did grocery shopping for rice, meat, side dishes, etc., to be delivered to vulnerable groups in welfare facilities. At Mangwon Market, he participated in the ‘Yongginae! Mangwon Market’ campaign, purchasing side dishes using reusable containers and also received coupons for exchanging for 10ℓ volume-based waste bags.
The ‘Yongginae!’ campaign means ‘to muster courage (勇氣, courage) and bring your own container (容器, container).’ When shopping at Mangwon Market with reusable containers, you can receive a coupon that can be exchanged for one 10ℓ volume-based waste bag.
Yoodonggyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “To protect the environment, we must endure small inconveniences,” and added, “I hope many people will participate in the Yongginae campaign.”
Chaehyunil, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, attended the ‘Chuseok Traditional Food Sharing Event’ held at the annex of the district office on the morning of the 16th.
Mayor Cha sincerely thanked the members of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Women’s Association Council who organized the sharing event for the Chuseok holiday and the officials from KDB Industrial Bank who sponsored it, and promised to take more meticulous care so that all residents can have a safe and warm holiday.
The traditional food packages made at the event, including kimchi, songpyeon, and gim, will be delivered to 100 low-income single-parent households in each neighborhood..
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the opening commemorative rounding event for Nowon Youth Stores No. 3 to 6 at 4 p.m. on the 16th.
Nowon Youth Stores No. 3 to 6 opened in the Gungneung-dong Noodle Street in Gungneung 1-dong. Store No. 3, ‘Dokkaebinu,’ sells eco-friendly soaps and zero-waste products and offers making classes. Store No. 4, ‘Ordinary Art Lab Chacha X Gallery Jiwonssi,’ is a complex cultural and artistic exhibition space and self-studio.
Store No. 5, ‘Studio Fireworks,’ is a design studio that supports the production and exhibition planning of works by local young designers. Store No. 6, ‘Makeplace Taki,’ is a coding school focusing on autonomous vehicle software coding and kit production.
The youth stores No. 3 to 6, which opened at the end of August, skipped the opening ceremony to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Mayor Oh visited the youth stores to check if there were any difficulties after opening and asked for opinions on revitalizing the youth stores, encouraging the young store owners.
Mayor Oh said, “Thank you for showing great courage by starting a business without giving up during difficult times,” and added, “We will continue to listen to the voices of young people so that they can demonstrate their capabilities.”
No Hyun-song, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, visited Seojin School, a special school for people with developmental disabilities in the area, on the afternoon of the 16th to tour the site and encourage students and staff.
On the occasion of Seojin School’s ‘School Open Day,’ Mayor No, who visited the site with Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, toured various parts of the school, including the multipurpose special activity room, book cafe, and beauty room, to check for any inconveniences.
Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, visited community service centers from the 14th to the 16th to inspect the on-site application process for the COVID-19 coexistence national support fund and encourage the staff.
The on-site inspection was arranged to check whether the national support fund, which started offline applications on the 13th, was being smoothly distributed and to listen to any inconveniences experienced by residents visiting the sites.
Geumcheon-gu is implementing a day-based system (based on the last digit of the birth year) from September 13 to 17 to prepare for a surge in applications and has expanded reception counters to minimize residents’ waiting times.
Additionally, for elderly and disabled residents with mobility difficulties, ‘visiting application reception’ services are operated to ensure that all eligible residents receive the support fund without omission.
As of September 15, Geumcheon-gu has distributed the national support fund to 84.2% of eligible residents. Mayor Yoo said, “Most of the visitors to the on-site reception centers are elderly, so more detailed guidance is needed to ensure no difficulties in applying,” and added, “We will do our best to prevent any inconveniences during the application and payment process.”
Seongjanghyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, visited the district’s Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters, the public health center’s screening clinic, and two temporary screening clinics in the area on the 15th.
This was to listen to the difficulties and encourage the medical staff and workers who are working hard to maintain the emergency response system during the Chuseok holiday.
The district will operate the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters situation room continuously from the 18th to the 22nd. The number of staff on duty is 17 per day, and during nighttime, the comprehensive situation room (dormitory) will maintain the situation.
Also, during the holiday period, residents can get tested by visiting the district’s screening clinics. Currently, the district operates three locations: Yongsan-gu Public Health Center Screening Clinic, Yongsan Station Temporary Screening Clinic, and Hannam-dong Public Parking Lot Temporary Screening Clinic.
During the Chuseok holiday period (20th to 22nd), the public health center screening clinic will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (disinfection time from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.). The Yongsan Station temporary screening clinic will operate from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the Hannam-dong temporary screening clinic will not operate.
Mayor Seongjanghyun said, “I deeply thank the medical staff and workers who are working on the front lines of administration for the safety of residents despite difficult conditions,” and added, “I hope all residents will follow quarantine rules and have a safer and more enjoyable Chuseok.”
Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, has attracted attention for his special resident communication efforts related to the controversy over the designation of the Green Smart Future School.
On the afternoon of the 6th, Mayor Jung visited the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and met directly with Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, to convey parents’ complaints regarding the Green Smart Future School project at Eonbuk Elementary School (located in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu) and requested the withdrawal of the designation.
Eonbuk Elementary School, selected as a target school for reconstruction under the Green Smart Future School project announced by the Ministry of Education on July 1, faced strong opposition from parents due to the project proceeding without prior parental consent, infringement of learning rights and safety issues caused by the use of modular classrooms during construction.
While the designations for Daegok Elementary School and Singoo Elementary School, which were remodeling targets, were withdrawn, the designation for Eonbuk Elementary School was requested to be withdrawn from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on the 17th of last month, but no definite answer was received for over three weeks, leading to continued protests by parents.
Additionally, condolence ribbons and placards installed on the school fence as protests negatively affected the students’ educational environment and caused ongoing complaints from nearby residents, prompting Mayor Jung to roll up his sleeves to resolve complaints from both sides.
Mayor Jung met with the chairperson of the Eonbuk Elementary School Parent-Teacher Committee and the parent representatives of the Emergency Measures Committee on the 3rd and 5th, respectively, to listen to complaints, and on the 6th, he met directly with Superintendent Cho to convey the complaints and request the withdrawal of the Green Smart Future School designation for Eonbuk Elementary School. Superintendent Cho responded that he would ‘positively consider’ the request and officially announced the withdrawal on the 15th.
