Prosecutors: "Strict Investigation and Severe Sentencing for Electronic Monitoring Bracelet Tampering Crimes"
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced on the 16th that it has instructed all regional prosecutors' offices nationwide to respond swiftly and strictly to criminal acts involving the tampering of electronic monitoring devices (electronic anklets) worn by offenders.
This directive comes in response to a recent surge in violent crimes committed by electronic monitoring subjects, including incidents where offenders damaged their electronic anklets and proceeded to commit additional crimes. Key measures include the establishment of a dedicated investigation system and the strengthening of special judicial police training. Specifically, it involves building a cooperative system with special judicial police to address crimes related to the tampering and violation of electronic monitoring device regulations, as well as additional offenses committed by those wearing the devices. The measures also cover the prompt processing of various warrant requests and support tasks necessary for tracking and apprehending suspects.
In particular, to alleviate public anxiety caused by crimes committed by electronic monitoring subjects and to ensure punishments commensurate with their offenses, the office has instructed to actively consider detention investigations under a zero-tolerance policy. Furthermore, it plans to thoroughly collect and reflect diverse sentencing data and take necessary investigative actions, including demanding severe sentences.
