70-Year-Old Grandmother Rescued Near Jeju Gotjawal Forest
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] On the 14th at around 9:30 PM, a grandmother who was collecting bijja (Korean nut pine) fruits near Gotjawal in Jeju City became isolated, lost consciousness, and collapsed, but was rescued.
According to Jeju Police Agency on the 15th, at 7:18 PM the previous day, a report was received from a living support worker in charge of elderly living alone. The worker had visited the person in need, who lives alone, at around 2 PM that day but, worried, tried calling the person’s mobile phone but received no answer. The police were requested to visit and check the residence.
At around 7:26 PM, Jeju Police arrived at the residence of the elderly person at Hamdeok Police Substation. Noting the scene where bijja fruits were being dried with a fan, they presumed that despite the bad weather, the person had gone out to collect the fruits and had not returned.
They contacted the son living in Jeju City and confirmed that the elderly person often went to the Gotjawal golf course area where many bijja trees grow, and searched the expected surrounding areas.
After 1 hour and 30 minutes of searching, the person in need was found collapsed on the roadside near Gotjawal, exhausted from strong winds and heavy rain. The police covered her with a raincoat to maintain body temperature and provided first aid before transporting her to Jeju National University Hospital by 119 ambulance.
Jeju Police plan to award a letter of appreciation to the living support worker who reported to the police, judging that the person in need had encountered a serious problem.
