[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] On Tuesday the 14th, COVID-19 cases surged across the country, with the number of confirmed cases reaching 1,554 as of 6 p.m.
According to health authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, the total number of new COVID-19 cases nationwide by 6 p.m. was 1,554, which is 350 more than the same time the previous day.
The number of confirmed cases had decreased due to fewer tests over the weekend but has now sharply increased again. This is 74 fewer than the 1,628 cases recorded at 6 p.m. last Tuesday (September 7).
Of the confirmed cases that day, 79.2% (1,231 cases) were from the Seoul metropolitan area, and 20.8% were from non-metropolitan areas. By region, there were 543 cases in Gyeonggi, 539 in Seoul, 149 in Incheon, 68 in Chungnam, 41 in Busan, 32 in Chungbuk, 28 in Gyeongnam, 26 in Daegu, 24 in Gwangju, 22 each in Ulsan, Daejeon, Gangwon, and Gyeongbuk, 6 each in Jeonbuk and Jeju, and 4 in Jeonnam.

The number of confirmed cases is expected to increase by midnight, possibly reaching around 2,000. The final number of confirmed cases the previous day was 1,497.
This marks the 71st consecutive day of four-digit confirmed cases since July 7. The average number of cases reported in regions over the past week is 1,757. On the 8th and 9th, the numbers were in the low 2,000s, then ranged between 1,700 and 1,800, and dropped to the 1,400s over the weekend.
Major infection cases are related to workplaces, kindergartens, schools, and academies. At a workplace in Jongno-gu (6th case), a total of 12 people tested positive after the first confirmed case on the 10th. At another workplace in Dongdaemun-gu (8th case), a total of 14 people have been infected so far.

In Gyeonggi, 17 people were confirmed positive in connection with an English academy in Ansan city, and 14 people were confirmed in relation to a daycare center (2nd case) in Bucheon city. In Busan, 8 people at a kindergarten in Buk-gu and 6 people at a middle school in Busanjin-gu tested positive. At a nightlife establishment in Nam-gu, Ulsan, a total of 13 people including employees, patrons, acquaintances, and family members have tested positive since the 31st of last month.
