Jeong Eui-sun Leads National Assembly Forum: "Robotics for Humanity"... Robot Dog 'Spot' Demonstration Included
Chairman Jeong Delivers Congratulatory Address at National Assembly Mobility Forum Seminar
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, said on the 13th regarding the robotics business, "The purpose of Hyundai Motor Group's investment and acceleration of research and development (R&D) in technologies such as mobility and robotics is ultimately for the comfort of all humanity, including ourselves and our descendants."
Chairman Chung attended the 3rd seminar of the National Assembly Mobility Forum held under the theme "The Future of Mobility for Humanity, Robotics" at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang on the morning of the same day. In his congratulatory remarks, he stated, "Robotics is not an end in itself but solely a means for humans. We will steadily develop the technology focusing on safety and other aspects going forward."
The National Assembly Mobility Forum was launched in July last year with the participation of 57 lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties. Currently, Lee Won-wook of the Democratic Party and Kwon Seong-dong of the People Power Party serve as co-chairs, while Hong Seong-guk of the Democratic Party and Yoon Han-hong of the People Power Party are responsible for research.
In his greeting, Representative Kwon said, "Mobility is characterized by convergence among various industries, and robotics is a field where cutting-edge technologies are especially concentrated. Since a domestic company recently acquired Boston Dynamics, which possesses world-class robotics technology, the National Assembly will spare no support to help us advance as a leading country."
Forum members, Chairman Chung, and Chung Man-ki, Chairman of the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, attended the seminar. The seminar was moderated by Representative Hong, with presentations including "Recent Trends and Issues in Robotics" by Lee Jun-gu, President of the Korea Institute for Robot Convergence, and "Introduction to Hyundai Motor Group Robotics and Collaboration with Boston Dynamics" by Hyun Dong-jin, Head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab.
Hyun, the lab head, emphasized, "Future mobility systems are very similar to basic robot system configurations, including environmental recognition technology through sensor fusion, decision-making technology using artificial intelligence, and control technology using mechatronics. In this regard, the role of robotics in future mobility technology is important."
He added, "The robot industry requires hardware and software to be developed and advanced together within a single product, which is similar to the automobile industry. The capabilities accumulated through automobile development can be directly integrated into the robot planning, manufacturing, and operation processes, which is a strength of Hyundai Motor Group."
Following the presentations, Boston Dynamics demonstrated Spot, the first quadruped robot they commercialized.
