Arrest of Gaseyeon Ends with Prosecutor's Rejection of Detention Warrant... Flood of Support Pours In
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The police executed arrest warrants against the cast members of the YouTube channel Garoseuro Yeonguso (Gaseyeon) and subsequently applied for detention warrants, but the prosecution dismissed them. After their release, a large amount of donations poured in during the Gaseyeon broadcast.
According to the police on the 12th, the prosecution dismissed the police's detention warrant application on the 9th for lawyer Kang Yong-seok and former reporter Kim Se-ui, who were charged with violating the Information and Communications Network Act (defamation).
The prosecution reportedly rejected the detention warrant application for lawyer Kang and others, stating that "there is no risk of evidence destruction or flight."
The police also applied for a detention warrant for YouTuber Kim Yong-ho, but the prosecution dismissed this as well.
Earlier, on the 7th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul executed arrest warrants against them. The Gaseyeon cast members are known to have been sued more than ten times on charges including defamation and insult. The police requested their attendance for investigation more than ten times, but when they did not comply, arrest warrants were issued and executed.
Former reporter Kim posted on the Gaseyeon YouTube channel's bulletin board, "Whose defamation case was this anyway? It was a defamation case concerning 'Cho Kuk's daughter' and 'Lee In-young's son,'" and questioned, "Is this a matter that justifies breaking into my house and arresting me?" Gaseyeon also live-streamed the standoff with the police and the arrest situation on YouTube.
With the dismissal of the detention warrants, they were all released after the 48-hour limit of the arrest warrants expired.
After being released, lawyer Kang held a live broadcast on the 10th. During the broadcast, he sang the gospel song "Now It Will Be Reversed" and shed tears. He said, "The lyrics deeply resonated with me, and I kept humming it even in the detention center," and he sang the entire song.
