"Leap for the New Bio Future"... 2021 Global Bio Conference Opens on the 13th
Over 60 Domestic and International Bio Experts as Speakers
[Asia Economy Reporter Jihee Kim] The '2021 Global Bio Conference (GBC)' will be held from the 13th to the 15th. Marking its 7th edition this year, the GBC will feature 67 experts including domestic and international bio specialists, pharmaceutical developers, and regulatory authorities as speakers.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 10th that the GBC will be held over three days starting on the 13th at the Grand Intercontinental Parnas Seoul Hotel in Gangnam, Seoul. Under the theme "New Normal, Leap for the Future of New Bio," the event will host participants from 20 countries including South Korea, the United States, Canada, and Australia.
This year, a total of 67 experts, including 30 from overseas, will serve as speakers. They will discuss trends in COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccine development, strategies for establishing a global vaccine hub, and the roles and directions of regulatory agencies. The event will begin on the 13th with an opening ceremony and eight keynote and special lectures, followed by eight forums, three workshops, and three related events from the 14th to the 15th. Considering COVID-19 prevention measures, the conference will be held in a hybrid format with both in-person and online live streaming.
On the first day’s keynote lectures, global scholars such as ▲Peter Doherty, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine laureate (1996) ▲Jong-Koo Lee, Professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine ▲Margaret Hamburg, former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ▲Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate (2004) ▲Rogerio Gaspar, Director at the World Health Organization (WHO) ▲Larry Kwak, Deputy Director at City of Hope Hospital, USA ▲Robert Kerbel, PhD at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University of Toronto, Canada ▲Lawrence Corey, Professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, USA will share research and development achievements and recent cases of biopharmaceuticals to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the second day, the 14th, a 'Vaccine Forum' sharing the current status of next-generation vaccine platform technology development and a Recombinant Biopharmaceuticals Forum will be held. The Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Forum will share cases of remote inspections during public health crises and discuss requirements for remote audits.
On the final day, forums on blood products, advanced biopharmaceuticals, global vaccine hub strategies, a workshop inviting overseas regulatory officials, and a youth mentoring program titled ‘Biopharmaceuticals, Entrust Tomorrow’ will take place.

A Ministry of Food and Drug Safety official stated, "We hope this conference will serve as an opportunity to share the latest research trends in global biopharmaceutical development and regulatory science policies for approvals, preparing for new infectious disease crises and envisioning the future of the bio industry." The official added, "In the new normal era, as a regulatory agency actively cooperating from research and development to production, import-export, and international diplomacy of biopharmaceuticals, South Korea will do its best to elevate the level of international regulatory science not only domestically but globally."
