Ministry of Education Establishes Public-Private Collaboration System for School Violence Prevention and Response
Signs MOU with National Police Agency and Pureunnamu Foundation
Appropriate Deployment of School Police Officers and Support for School Violence Prevention Education
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] To strengthen the prevention and response to school violence, the operation of school police officers will be revitalized and school violence prevention education will be expanded.
On the 10th, the Ministry of Education will sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Police Agency and the Pureunamu Foundation to establish a public-private cooperation system for the prevention and response to school violence. The Ministry of Education, the National Police Agency, and the Foundation agreed to actively build a cooperative system to prevent and respond to school violence and work together to create safe schools free from school violence.
To prevent school violence, the operation of school police officers and youth police schools will be revitalized, and the preventive education activities of school police officers will be strengthened while actively striving to improve their work capabilities. Appropriate allocation of school police officers will be ensured, and school violence prevention education linked to the curriculum will also be supported. School police officers, introduced in 2012, are police officers dedicated to school violence and youth guidance tasks, responsible for counseling on school violence cases, guiding offending students, and protecting victimized students.
To prevent the rapidly increasing cyber violence, public education and promotional activities will be conducted, and specialized counseling training will be provided to the counseling staff of the ‘117 School Violence Reporting Center’ to strengthen cyber violence response capabilities. Support for victims of school violence will also be increased by expanding on-site counseling visits for the emotional and psychological recovery of victimized students and their families and by expanding customized support.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye said, "This memorandum of understanding is meaningful as it represents the public and private sectors joining forces to safely protect students from school violence, and we will continue to communicate with the educational field to prevent and detect school violence early and fundamentally respond to it."
Kim Chang-ryong, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, said, "Since proactive prevention and early active intervention are very important in school violence, we will strengthen the cooperative system with the Ministry of Education and the Pureunamu Foundation for the prevention and response to school violence," adding, "With the implementation of the autonomous police system, we will promote various school violence eradication measures tailored to regional characteristics through cooperation with city and provincial autonomous police committees."
