This certification is an ASC Producer (ASC-Farm) certification, which Wando-gun fully managed from the survey of farms wishing to be certified, education, consulting, to inspection. It is the result of collaboration between the cooperative consisting of 7 farms including CEO Lee Jong-yoon, the consulting firm Aqua Pro (CEO Yoon Ji-hyun), and Wando-gun.
Including these 8 certified farms, Wando-gun has obtained ASC certification for abalone from a total of 39 farms, continuing its reputation as the 'world's largest holder of ASC certifications.'
Due to COVID-19, the certificate was presented by Wando-gun Governor Shin Woo-cheol instead of Control Union, the certification inspection agency.
Meanwhile, with the Wando abalone certified by ASC entering the domestic large supermarket chain Lotte Mart (5 locations) for the first time, a business agreement ceremony was held between Wando Abalone Co., Ltd. and Wando Abalone ASC Cooperative to promote ASC certification and cooperation in production and distribution sectors.
Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “I consider the additional acquisition of abalone ASC certification and entry into large supermarkets meaningful,” adding, “We will expand international eco-friendly seafood certifications to differentiate Wando seafood and strengthen competitiveness.”
Meanwhile, ASC certification was jointly established in 2010 by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and IDH (The Sustainable Trade Initiative of the Netherlands) to prevent overfishing of marine resources and pollution caused by overcrowded aquaculture, aiming to promote sustainable aquaculture fisheries.
