Student from Department of Visual Design at Gyeongnam Information University Wins Grand Prize in 'Cheonmasan Complex Observatory Symbolic Sculpture Design Competition'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Jang Chang-wook, a sophomore student in the Visual Design Department at Gyeongnam Information University, won the Grand Prize in the ‘Cheonmasan Complex Observatory Symbolic Sculpture Design Contest.’ He received a prize of 7 million KRW.
On August 27, Gyeongnam Information University held the contest under the theme, “Embedding Busan’s Symbol (LANDMARK) in Cheonmasan, the City Leading Peace,” focusing on the center and symbol of Busan and Seo-gu.
Jang Chang-wook’s Grand Prize-winning work, “Longing Leap,” is a sculptural design concept based on the legend of Jeongssi-nyeo and Nasir from the Silla period who could not unite, and the Cheonma Rock legend of descending from the sky and flying toward Tsushima Island.
The design features the figures facing each other in longing, and the wave-shaped back symbolizes five horseshoes, creating a story-rich and captivating piece.
The work was highly praised for its excellent relevance to the theme, creativity, symbolism, and the use of materials such as stainless steel and stone pedestal, which enhanced both constructability and aesthetics.
Jang Chang-wook is a member of the startup club ‘3 EYES’ operated by the Visual Design Department, which has produced numerous award winners every year for nearly 20 years since 2003 in various contests and competitions.
Jang said, “I am interested in contest participation and startup item development through club activities,” and added, “I want to become a product designer who pursues attractive designs.”
