According to health authorities and the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 7th, from midnight to 6 p.m. nationwide, 1,628 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported. This is 350 more than the same time the previous day (1,278 cases).
The metropolitan area recorded 1,253 cases (77.0%), while non-metropolitan areas accounted for 375 cases (23.0%). Considering that the metropolitan area's share has surged to the high 70% range based on the interim tally, concerns are rising that the resurgence in the metropolitan area will intensify.
By city and province, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 591, Seoul 557, Incheon 105, Gyeongnam 56, Chungnam 48, Daegu 44, Chungbuk 33, Gwangju 32, Busan 29, Daejeon 28, Gangwon 26, Gyeongbuk 25, Ulsan 24, Jeonbuk 15, Jeonnam and Jeju 7 each, and Sejong 1.
With more than five hours remaining until midnight, when the daily tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases is expected to exceed 2,000. This would be about 400 more than the previous day (1,597 cases).
The fourth wave, which began in early July centered on the metropolitan area, has continued for over two months. Daily confirmed cases have been in the four digits for 63 consecutive days since July 7 (1,211 cases).
The surge is largely due to cluster infections occurring in schools, workplaces, and multi-use facilities. Regarding a goshiwon (second case) in Jung-gu, Seoul, the first confirmed case was reported on the 3rd of this month, and so far a total of 19 people have tested positive.
