[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Junhyung] On the 6th, the Democratic Party of Korea recommended lawyer Kim Pilseong of the Garosu Law Firm and Professor Song Hyunju of Hallym University Media School as external members to participate in the '8-member consultative body' for discussions on the Media Arbitration Act.
A Democratic Party official stated on the same day, "We have finalized the Democratic Party experts for the consultative body related to the Fake News Damage Relief Act," adding, "They were selected considering their interest and expertise in the relevant law."
Both lawyer Kim and Professor Song support the introduction of punitive damages, which is considered a core aspect of the Media Arbitration Act. Lawyer Kim has served as an advisory member of the Democratic Party's Media Special Committee. It is also reported that lawyer Kim acted as a defense attorney for Jung Kyungshim, a professor at Dongyang University and wife of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk. Professor Song has expressed support for the introduction of punitive damages.
Lawyer Kim and Professor Song will participate in the 8-member consultative body along with Democratic Party lawmakers Kim Jongmin and Kim Yongmin, who were previously decided. The People Power Party has confirmed lawmakers Choi Hyungdoo, a former journalist, and Jeon Juhye, a former judge. External experts are still under discussion. Previously, the Democratic Party and the People Power Party agreed to each recommend two external members to the consultative body.
