Moderna Vaccine Additional 2.552 Million Doses Arrive Tomorrow... Government "Close to Promised 7.01 Million Doses" (Update)
Since the 23rd of last month, a cumulative total of 6,759,000 doses
25,000 doses fewer than the promised 7,010,000 doses
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Approximately 2.55 million doses of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine from the United States are scheduled to arrive in South Korea on the 6th. Although the initially promised supply of 7.01 million doses by the 5th was not met, the country will receive a quantity close to the planned amount, albeit one day late.
Son Young-rae, head of the Social Strategy Division at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters, stated during the regular COVID-19 briefing on the 5th, "Following the arrival of 1.926 million doses of the Moderna vaccine on the 2nd and 3rd, 1.263 million doses arrived at Incheon International Airport this afternoon," adding, "An additional 2.552 million doses are expected to arrive domestically tomorrow (the 6th)." As a result, the total number of Moderna vaccine doses supplied domestically from the 23rd of last month through the 6th of this month reached 6.759 million doses.
Last month, the South Korean government delegation visited Moderna in the United States to protest the repeated vaccine supply disruptions and agreed to receive 7.01 million doses by this date. Since then, 1.017 million doses arrived on the 23rd of last month, followed by 1.021 million doses on the 2nd and 905,000 doses on the 3rd of this month. With the additional shipment arriving today, approximately 60% of the promised quantity has been actually delivered.
However, Moderna supplied 2.552 million doses on the 6th, one day later than originally promised, bringing the total quantity close to the initially agreed amount. When combined with regularly imported Pfizer vaccines and vaccine shipments from Romania, the authorities explained that there is a sufficient supply of vaccines to carry out the vaccination plan.
