Tracking and Arresting a 60s Suspect Who Assaulted Paramedics and Fled in Uijeongbu, Detained at Uijeongbu Prison
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Fire Agency announced that it has urgently arrested a man in his 60s, Mr. A, on charges of violating the Act on 119 Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, and sent him to the prosecution with an indictment opinion on the afternoon of the 1st.
On the 19th of last month, the Uijeongbu Fire Station 119 emergency medical team, dispatched following a resident's report that a person in poor health was lying on the street, provided emergency treatment to Mr. A, a man in his 60s, and transported him to the hospital. During this process, Mr. A repeatedly assaulted the face of the paramedic with verbal abuse because the transport was not quick enough. Afterwards, Mr. A disappeared without receiving hospital treatment.
Recognizing the incident, two special judicial police officers, including Fire Inspector Baek Geon-woo of the Northern Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters Fire Judicial Team, investigated Mr. A’s whereabouts, who had no fixed residence. On the 27th of last month, they received a tip from a paramedic and urgently arrested Mr. A in the emergency room of a hospital in Uijeongbu. With cooperation from related agencies, he was detained at Uijeongbu Prison, and a detention warrant was promptly issued and executed.
Subsequently, based on victim and witness statements and evidence related to the case, the investigation was swiftly concluded, and Mr. A was sent to the prosecution on charges of violating the Act on 119 Rescue and Emergency Medical Services on the same day.
A Fire Judicial Team official explained, “The urgent arrest and execution of the detention warrant for Mr. A were carried out because his residence was unclear and there was a risk of reoffending. The urgent arrest and detention investigation were exceptionally handled by the fire department and were made possible through the prompt cooperation of the Uijeongbu Prosecutor’s Office and Uijeongbu Prison.”
Lim Won-seop, head of the Northern Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters, said, “We will continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against offenders who obstruct fire activities, such as assaulting paramedics,” and added, “We will share the experience of this urgent arrest and forced investigation to take the lead in eradicating assaults on paramedics.”
