View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering has established a new organizational culture suitable for the New Normal era and has embarked on creating a ‘better workplace.’
On the 1st, Hyundai Engineering announced the newly established organizational culture slogan ‘Engineers Playground’ and four organizational culture codes ‘Autonomy, Collaboration, Horizontal, Challenge,’ and held an online inauguration ceremony featuring promotional videos on eight behavioral norms and a discussion video with CEO Changhak Kim.
Hyundai Engineering’s organizational culture inauguration ceremony was conducted using various non-face-to-face methods such as video viewing and e-book publication, considering social distancing measures. Among these, the opening of an online promotional hall utilizing the Metaverse platform attracted particular attention.
In the Metaverse platform ‘Gathertown’ virtual space, Hyundai Engineering’s headquarters was faithfully recreated, showcasing Hyundai Engineering’s history, organizational culture codes, a board for cheering and suggestions on organizational culture, and events such as games and treasure hunts. It was evaluated that not only headquarters but also employees working at domestic and overseas sites could easily access and experience the new organizational culture.
The newly established organizational culture consists of the organizational culture slogan, organizational culture codes newly defined based on Hyundai Engineering’s working methods, and behavioral norms to practice them.
Hyundai Engineering’s new organizational culture slogan, ‘Engineers Playground,’ means a company where engineers can freely play and dynamically demonstrate all their capabilities, representing Hyundai Engineering’s organizational culture.
The organizational culture codes were established considering external environmental changes such as rapidly changing management environments and competitive paradigms, internal situations including telecommuting due to the global pandemic, and changes in organizational member needs due to the increase of the MZ generation.
By examining the cultural codes pursued by members, including the tendencies of engineers who make up most of the employees, characteristics of the MZ generation, and results from a three-year organizational culture diagnosis, and by thoroughly analyzing and synthesizing the characteristics needed for Hyundai Engineering in the New Normal era such as the nature of Hyundai Engineering’s business, business vision, Hyundai Motor Group, and management environment trends, four codes?Autonomy, Collaboration, Horizontal, and Challenge?were selected as Hyundai Engineering’s new organizational culture codes.
Additionally, to share and build consensus on the new organizational culture codes with all employees, the published codebook reflects the characteristics of the construction industry based on drawings composed of points, lines, and planes, and gathers Hyundai Engineering’s unique story and eight behavioral norms for internalizing the organizational culture codes: “We autonomously exist at any point, connect to form lines through collaboration, respect various planes (horizontal), and create things never seen before (challenge).”
