Say "fog-type cooling" instead of "cooling fog"
'Home Ludens' Alternative Term Recommended as 'Jipnori-jok'
On the 5th, cooling fog was operating on the Seokchon Lake walking trail in Songpa-gu, Seoul, where the weather was hot and humid. Cooling fog utilizes the principle of absorbing surrounding heat as the mist evaporates into the air, effectively lowering the ambient temperature by 3 to 5 degrees. Photo by Mun Ho-nam munonam@
View original imageThe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 1st that the term 'cooling fog' be replaced with the Korean terms 'angyehyeong naenggak' or 'angyehyeong naenggaksu' (meaning 'fog-type cooling' or 'fog-type cooling water'). Additionally, they suggested 'jipnori-jok' as the Korean alternative for 'home ludens.'
Cooling fog refers to water or devices that spray water in the form of fog to lower the surrounding temperature. The selection of 'angyehyeong naenggak' and 'angyehyeong naenggaksu' reflected the results of a survey. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 20th to the 25th of last month with about 2,000 participants, 94.6% of respondents answered that the terms were appropriate. Furthermore, 63.7% agreed on the necessity of Korean alternatives.
Home ludens refers to people who enjoy playing and relaxing at home rather than engaging in outdoor activities. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language decided on 'jipnori-jok' as the replacement term at the New Words Meeting held on the 19th of last month.

Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of these alternatives, encouraging government departments and media outlets to take the lead.
