Daegu Racing Toward the 'Future Car Mecca'... Creating an Autonomous Driving Research Environment → Establishing a New Industry Ecosystem
Construction of 'Autonomous Driving Convergence Support Center' Playing a Key Role in Technology Development
Establishment of Large-Scale Urban Demonstration Town, Promotion of Future Vehicle Transition, and Workforce Training
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Daegu City is embarking on the creation of a large-scale autonomous vehicle research environment to establish itself as a leading city for future-oriented automobiles.
Daegu City has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s projects: the ‘5G-based Autonomous Driving Convergence Technology Demonstration Platform Project,’ the ‘Future Car Digital Convergence Industry Demonstration Platform Construction Project,’ and the ‘Automotive Industry Future Technology Innovation Open Platform Ecosystem Construction.’
They plan to build the ‘Autonomous Driving Convergence Support Center,’ which plays a key role in autonomous vehicle technology development, and establish various infrastructure for autonomous driving demonstration on real roads in Suseong Alpha City, Technopolis, Dalseong 2nd Industrial Complex, and Daegu National Industrial Complex, thereby completing an environment for early commercialization of autonomous vehicles.
The ‘Autonomous Driving Convergence Support Center,’ which supports related technologies such as vehicle-to-everything communication, big data, artificial intelligence, and 5G-based communication?core elements of autonomous driving?as well as technology development, workforce training, and service development necessary for autonomous driving, will begin construction this August and is scheduled for completion in October next year.
Centered around the center, they plan to connect local automotive parts companies, universities, and research institutes to create a foundation that can generate synergistic effects for regional business development, such as new product development, parts performance improvement, and training of future car specialists.
The Digital Convergence Support Center, Corporate Support Center, and an Open Platform Center that processes all data related to the automotive industry will be housed there, and a separate space will be prepared where local companies can freely use expensive research equipment that is difficult for individual companies to establish.
To create the largest demonstration environment in Korea, more than 100 km of roads will be secured in Suseong Alpha City, Technopolis, Daegu National Industrial Complex, and Dalseong 2nd Industrial Complex, where roadside devices, sudden situation detectors, and weather observation equipment will be installed.
The installed equipment will mutually share vehicle status information, road information, and road surface information to ensure safe driving, and collect comprehensive information on autonomous driving systems and vehicle parts to be utilized for the advancement of autonomous driving technology and regional industrial development.
Daegu City plans to link the Intelligent Automotive Parts Promotion Institute’s driving test site with the country’s largest demonstration roads to create an environment where the entire cycle of autonomous driving commercialization?from test track testing to real road vehicle testing?can be conducted in one place.
An open data platform will be established to comprehensively collect, standardize, and distribute various industrial data in the automotive field that individual companies find difficult to secure.
Through this, customized information will be provided to companies, and support such as technical consultation, testing, certification, and design will be offered to help companies improve products and develop new products.
Daegu City plans to support the gradual transition of local automotive parts companies into future car companies by linking research institutes, universities, and companies, and to cultivate specialized personnel tailored to companies to lay the foundation for sustainable development.
Lee Seung-dae, Director of Innovation Growth Bureau of Daegu City, said, “To develop the autonomous vehicle industry, a future new growth industry, we will gather all of Daegu’s capabilities to actively support the accumulation of related technologies and talent development to create an autonomous driving industry ecosystem.”
