Seogwipo Coast Guard to Strengthen 'Safety Accident Prevention Activities' Starting Next Month
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Coast Guard Station (Chief Hwang Junhyun) announced on the 31st that it will strengthen "safety accident prevention activities" from the 1st of next month until the end of December to prevent human and property damage caused by speeding of vessels entering and leaving Seogwipo Port.
Just as there are speed limits for vehicles on roads, speed limits are also regulated within harbor waters.
Since high-speed navigation by vessels can cause large waves, raising concerns about damage such as cracks and collisions due to contact and friction between vessels, the province has set a regulation through a public notice limiting navigation speed within Seogwipo Port to 5 knots (9.2 km/h).
Violating this regulation results in a fine of up to 2 million KRW under the "Act on Entry and Exit of Vessels".
With approximately 67,000 vessel entries and exits at Seogwipo Port, a trade port, last year and about 38,000 as of mid-this month, including cargo ships, fishing boats, and leisure boats, the risk of collision accidents is high, making safety management essential.
The Seogwipo Coast Guard held meetings with the Fisheries Cooperative, Shipowners Association, and leisure business operators to improve user awareness, and plans to promote compliance with speed limits through various media such as electronic display boards and banners.
This activity will include a promotion and guidance period for one month starting next month, followed by joint crackdowns through information exchange with related organizations such as the Seogwipo Police Substation and VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) until the end of this year.
A Seogwipo Coast Guard official said, "Through this prevention activity, we will strengthen promotional activities to raise safety awareness among vessel operators and help them recognize the risks of navigation violations."
