Lee Jae-myung Camp Responds to Free Legal Representation Controversy as "Minbyun Practice"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] The camp of Lee Jae-myung, the ruling party's presidential candidate and Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated on the 30th that the allegation that Lee received free legal defense in a past election law violation case is based on the practice of Minbyun (Lawyers for a Democratic Society) expressing support by listing names on the defense team without compensation.
Park, a lawmaker from Minbyun, said at the Lee Jae-myung camp's regular briefing, "For decades, Minbyun has had the practice of showing support by listing the names of its members when they face difficulties or investigations."
He explained, "Considering the nature of the case, there was police abuse of power, so they did not participate in the lawsuit but only listed their names," adding, "This cannot be seen as a prohibited act under the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act."
Regarding the allegations of lawyer fee payments raised by some, including the Lee Nak-yeon camp, Park drew a clear line, calling them "blatant falsehoods."
He continued, "The overall increase in assets is due to a 600 million KRW rise in the official land price of owned real estate, and cash assets have actually decreased."
