"Basic Science, Talent Development, and Artificial Intelligence as the Three Major Future Visions"
National Science and Technology Advisory Council, Survey Results from 1,174 Participants of the 'Citizen Participation Advisory Group' Recruitment
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] Citizens interested in science and technology consider basic scientific research, talent development, artificial intelligence, and big data as key future keywords.
The Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology announced on the 29th that, based on a survey of 1,174 participants recruited for the 'Citizen Participation Advisory Group' until the end of July, the top three future visions perceived by the public were basic scientific research (25.8%), talent development (14.7%), and artificial intelligence and big data (10.9%). In the open-ended question about opinions on science and technology, keywords such as policy, talent, basic science, and creativity were most frequently mentioned.
Meanwhile, the Advisory Council received a total of 1,174 applications for the newly announced 'Citizen Participation Advisory Group' until the end of July and selected 10 members. The age distribution of applicants was 14.7% under their 20s, 19.1% in their 30s, 32.5% in their 40s, and 33.6% aged 50 and above. Regarding occupations, 35.4% were students, 18% professionals from other fields, 5.9% teachers, 5.2% researchers and scientists, 5.5% public institution workers and government officials, and 29.6% others.
The Citizen Participation Advisory Group will begin activities with an inauguration ceremony in September and will engage in online and offline activities for six months, including exchanges with advisory members, visits to research sites, and public proposals.

Kang Geon-gi, head of the support team at the National Science and Technology Advisory Council, said, "The purpose of operating the Citizen Participation Advisory Group is not only to reflect experts' opinions in the policy advisory process but also to listen to diverse opinions from the public." He added, "While the group will be centered around the 10 selected members, we plan to provide continuous communication opportunities by conducting regular surveys, policy promotions, public proposals, and participation events for the 1,164 online participants who were not selected."
