[Asia Economy Reporter Sumi Hwang] "If a new mole suddenly appears on your body, please examine it carefully."
This is a plea from a woman who was diagnosed with terminal cancer after disregarding a newly formed mole on her body.
According to foreign media including the British daily Daily Mail on the 27th (local time), Cassidy Pearson (27), who lives in Minnesota, USA, is currently battling terminal melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
Cassidy discovered a mole on the inside of her thigh a long time ago. At the time, she had no idea that this mole was a symptom of cancer, so she did not pay much attention to it.
Cassidy said, "The mole was slightly larger than the eraser at the end of a pencil, it was itchy and dry, and when scratched, it would bleed," adding, "Since I was 18, the shape of the mole changed and it became discolored."
Later, similar moles appeared on her back, but Cassidy ignored them. Then she became pregnant and, without health insurance, continued to neglect these moles.
When she visited the hospital at age 21, Cassidy received a shocking diagnosis. She was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer, and the cancer cells had already spread to the lymph nodes at stage 3.
One year later, the cancer cells metastasized throughout her body, including her brain, and Cassidy was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
She underwent surgeries including joint replacement, removal of half of her right lung, and bowel resection, along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy as part of her cancer treatment.
However, most treatments were ineffective, and it is reported that after completing 10 weeks of radiation therapy, she plans to enter hospice care.
Cassidy tearfully urged, "I don't know how much time I have left. I hope no one else goes through what I did. You should visit a dermatologist at least once a year for a checkup. If you see anything suspicious on your skin, you should get it examined."

Meanwhile, melanoma is a cancer originating from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin pigment. Since it has no specific symptoms, it is important to distinguish it from moles through skin examinations. If not detected and treated early, it can metastasize, leading to a poor prognosis.
