Delivery Rider Crushed to Death by Truck Near Seolleung Station... Memorial Line Forms at Accident Site
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Service Federation General Service Union held a memorial event on the morning of the 27th at Seolleung Station in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, demanding that the motorcycle delivery worker's death accident near Seolleung Station road the previous day be recognized as an industrial accident.
On that day, delivery workers paid tribute to the deceased in his 40s, Mr. A, by placing chrysanthemums and lighting incense between exits 8 and 9 of Seolleung Station where his motorcycle was placed.
The union stated in a press release, "The Seolleung Station motorcycle rider is our image," adding, "We are driven into a speed competition among platform companies to quickly deliver food to customers and run on the road for survival."
They continued, "Platform companies tell us to stop and accept order calls, but the next order call rings while delivering," emphasizing, "If we do not accept it, we have to wait a long time, so we inevitably have to look at our phones on the road."
The union demanded that the delivery platform company fulfill its moral responsibility by paying funeral expenses and consolation money to the bereaved family and applying industrial accident insurance to the deceased. They also urged efforts to strengthen safety education for delivery workers.
