Jeonbuk Province Green Hydrogen Production Cluster Project Selected for Preliminary Feasibility Study
A 'Green Light' for Leap to Become a Hub of the Green Hydrogen Industry
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] The green light has grown for Jeonbuk Province's hydrogen industry promotion strategy, which aims to produce carbon-free clean energy using renewable energy from Saemangeum.
On the 24th, Jeonbuk Province announced that the Green Hydrogen Production Cluster Project, jointly planned with the Ministry of Industry and Jeonbuk Technopark, has been selected as a preliminary feasibility study project by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The Green Hydrogen Production Cluster Project aims to establish the Saemangeum area as a green hydrogen hub, creating a full-cycle hydrogen industry ecosystem unique to Jeonbuk Province, covering hydrogen production (green hydrogen production cluster), storage and transportation (carbon composite hydrogen storage containers), and utilization (hydrogen commercial vehicles, fuel cells, Saemangeum Green Industrial Complex, etc.).
Jeonbuk Province plans to produce green hydrogen by creating the largest domestic 100MW-class water electrolysis facility cluster using 7GW scale renewable energy from Saemangeum in the green hydrogen production cluster, and to build an integrated support center for the cluster of related water electrolysis companies and corporate support.
This project will build common facilities funded by the national government, such as power supply facilities necessary for companies producing hydrogen through water electrolysis, storage and shipping facilities for produced hydrogen and oxygen, and integrated control and monitoring facilities. By doing so, it aims to attract private companies' participation and investment in the green hydrogen production business, which has high initial costs and is difficult to enter, and to foster and cluster upstream and downstream industries.
In particular, the ripple effects are expected to include attracting 40 companies (20 green hydrogen production companies, 20 center tenants), employment inducement of 30,020 people, production inducement of 5.705 trillion KRW, and employment inducement of 34,464 people.
Jeonbuk Province expects that with the selection of this preliminary feasibility study project, Jeonbuk can solidify its position as a center of the green hydrogen industry.
Governor Song Ha-jin said, "To transition to a carbon-neutral society and lead the era of ecological civilization, the development of the green hydrogen industry, which is ultimately an eco-friendly energy, is essential," and added, "We will do our best to pass the preliminary feasibility study and help Jeonbuk become a center of clean energy."
Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced without emitting any carbon dioxide during the production process, such as hydrogen produced by water electrolysis using electricity obtained from renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.
