The Seodaemun Police Station has been conducting meetings with local financial institutions and voice phishing prevention teams at each district police station and patrol office, strengthening patrol activities, and promoting practical crime prevention efforts.
A 28-year-old university student, Mr. A, on the 6th, at the Shinhan Bank Sinchon Branch, received a call to his mother’s phone number, during which his mother was speaking incoherently in a way she could not understand. Then, an unknown man answered the call and told Mr. A that "your mother has been kidnapped and is being held, so prepare 10 million won in cash." Mr. A then withdrew 10 million won from his own account.
Suspecting something was wrong, the bank teller suspected voice phishing and reported it to the police. In cooperation with the district police station in charge of Guri City, Gyeonggi Province, they confirmed that the mother was safe. The Sinchon District Police Station of Seodaemun Police Station visited the bank on the 17th and presented a commendation plaque from the Chief of Seodaemun Police Station.
On February 5th of this year, a male customer in his 60s, Mr. B, who visited the Nonghyup Bank Sinchon Central Branch to withdraw 12.2 million won, was observed by a teller using words like "Financial Supervisory Service" during a phone call. The teller reported it to the police, who confirmed it was voice phishing and prevented the damage.
