Typhoon No. 12 'Omais' Approaches Within 233km of Seogwipo, Jeju
Observed to Land on the South Coast Around Midnight
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Typhoon No. 12 'Omais' has approached within 233km of Seogwipo, Jeju.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced on the 23rd at 3 PM that Omais is moving northward at 45 km/h about 230 km south-southwest of Seogwipo. The central pressure of the typhoon is 998 hPa (hectopascal), and the maximum wind speed is 65 km/h.
The distances between major locations and the typhoon center are Seogwipo 233 km, Jeju Island 258 km, Seongsan 260 km, and Wando 350 km. Omais is expected to pass over Jeju Island tonight and make landfall on the southern coast around midnight. It is then expected to rapidly transform into an extratropical cyclone.
As of 4 PM today, heavy rain warnings have been issued for Gyeonggi Province, Chungcheong region, and some southern areas due to the stationary front and terrain effects caused by southern winds. In Gyeongnam, heavy rain of about 20 mm per hour is falling.
Due to the typhoon and low pressure over the West Sea, heavy rain and strong winds are expected nationwide until the next day.
From 12 AM to 4 PM today, the expected rainfall at major points includes 136.5 mm at Oeyeondo, Boryeong; 137.0 mm at Eocheongdo, Gunsan; 91.0 mm at Cheongyang; 74.0 mm at Saryangdo, Tongyeong; 71.5 mm at Hongbuk, Hongseong; and 70.5 mm at Goseong. During the same period, the maximum instantaneous wind speeds at major points are expected to be 91 km/h at Samgakbong, Jeju; 91 km/h at Gageodo, Sinan; 68 km/h at Eocheongdo, Gunsan; and 63 km/h at Misiryeong, Goseong.
