Lee Jae-myung: "Let's Turn the Climate Crisis into an Opportunity for Renewable Energy Transition"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, proposed on the 22nd, on the occasion of 'Energy Day,' to turn the climate crisis into an opportunity for an energy transition.
On the same day, Governor Lee said on Facebook, "Even in the narrow Korean Peninsula, we are feeling the climate crisis firsthand," adding, "There are frequent downpours like Southeast Asian squalls, while on one side, heatwaves persist, and on the other side, flood damage occurs."
He continued, "Experts unanimously warn that if we fail to prepare for the climate crisis, there is no future for humanity," and added, "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) also recommends limiting the global temperature rise to within 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels, and the climate clock now shows only 7 years and 10 months remaining."
Furthermore, he said, "According to an analysis by a Swiss reinsurance company, the economic damage caused by the climate crisis in 2050 will be at an irrecoverable level," and "Globally, GDP is expected to decrease by 18%, and in our country, annual GDP is also expected to decline from 2.7% to 12.8%."
Therefore, Governor Lee emphasized, "To realize carbon neutrality by 2050 in response to the climate crisis humanity faces, an energy transition is no longer avoidable," and stressed, "To turn this transformative crisis into an opportunity, we must stop using fossil fuels and expand renewable energy such as solar and wind power."
He also said, "The Moon Jae-in administration has promoted energy transition policies including 'Renewable Energy 3020,'" and evaluated, "As a result, achievements have appeared, and it has been confirmed that the contribution of solar power generation during the summer peak power hours exceeded 11%. This is equivalent to the effect of more than seven new nuclear power plants with a scale exceeding 10GW."
