Yeosu Maritime Affairs Office, 143 Marine Area Use Consultations in First Half... Similar to Previous Year
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The Jeonnam Yeosu Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office announced that the number of marine area use consultations conducted in the first half of this year for the development of public waters such as the sea totaled 143 cases, similar to the 148 cases in the first half of 2020.
Marine area use consultation is a system for consultation between the Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office and local governments to minimize negative impacts and prevent damage to the marine environment caused by indiscriminate marine development and use such as occupation, use, and reclamation of public waters in the sea and coastal areas. Depending on the scale of the target project, it is divided into simplified marine area use consultation and general marine area use consultation. In the first half of 2021, a total of 143 consultations were conducted, including 119 cases of simplified marine area use consultation and 24 cases of general marine area use consultation.
Looking at the details by type of projects subject to marine area use consultation, ▲ construction and operation of artificial structures such as piers and breakwaters accounted for 99 cases (69% of the total), ▲ utilization of seawater intake and discharge for aquaculture operation accounted for 29 cases (21%), ▲ reclamation of public waters accounted for 6 cases (4%), and ▲ dredging and other projects accounted for 8 cases (6%).
By region, the distribution was ▲ Yeosu City with 76 cases (53%), ▲ Goheung County with 30 cases (21%), ▲ Jangheung County with 16 cases (11%), ▲ Boseong County with 10 cases (7%), ▲ Suncheon City with 8 cases (6%), and ▲ Gwangyang City with 3 cases (2%).
A representative from the Yeosu Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office stated, "For development projects that may have significant negative impacts on the marine environment, we will strengthen environmental impact reviews at the marine area use consultation stage and do our best to preserve the marine environment."
