US Administration Provides Emergency Support of 600 Billion Won for Afghanistan Crisis
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The U.S. administration is providing $500 million (approximately 588.2 billion KRW) in aid for Afghan refugees.
On the 16th (local time), according to EFE News Agency, President Joe Biden stated in a White House announcement, "In response to the unexpected emergency in Afghanistan, we have decided to allocate emergency resources," adding, "Support will be provided through affiliated agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)."
The U.S. also plans to provide funds to countries accepting Afghan refugees, as well as to international organizations and human rights groups assisting them.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to submit President Biden's aid plan to Congress.
Following the withdrawal of U.S. and other Western forces, the Taliban rapidly expanded control over Afghanistan and currently holds the capital, Kabul.
