[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in held a summit with Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan, who visited South Korea as a state guest, and announced through a joint press release that "we will increase cooperation in new industries and the Fourth Industrial Revolution sectors." On the morning of the 17th, President Moon held a joint press conference with President Tokayev at the Blue House, stating, "(Both leaders) agreed to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in promising fields such as big data utilization and the commercialization of 5G mobile communications."
President Moon said, "Based on the achievements of the economic cooperation program 'Fresh Wind,' adopted by our two leaders in 2019, we decided to expand cooperation in new industries," adding, "Furthermore, we will strengthen cooperation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution sectors."
In the healthcare sector, they agreed to expand e-health, private sector cooperation projects, and exchanges of medical personnel, knowledge, and services, and to further strengthen cooperation in the space industry based on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on space cooperation between the two countries.
The two countries also agreed to cooperate in overcoming infectious diseases. President Moon stated, "Our two leaders share the recognition that international cooperation must be strengthened to overcome and prevent infectious diseases, and based on the cooperation during COVID-19, we will closely collaborate on prevention, management, and response to infectious diseases," adding, "We will also seek cooperation in responding to the climate crisis through international organizations such as the Global Green Growth Institute, led by Korea."
Marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, they will increase human and cultural exchanges. President Moon said, "The two countries will designate next year as the 'Year of Mutual Cultural Exchange' and prepare various events to further expand exchanges between our peoples," adding, "We agreed to make joint efforts to revitalize exchanges."
President Moon expressed gratitude, saying, "Kazakhstan warmly embraced the migration of ethnic Koreans 80 years ago," and "Thanks to President Tokayev's generous support for the repatriation of patriots, we were able to bring back two patriots, Gye Bong-woo and Hwang Un-jung, along with their spouses, and through this visit, we were able to bring General Hong Beom-do as well."
President Tokayev responded, "Korea is a strategic partner for Kazakhstan," and "Today, to further develop this cooperation, we signed several documents and reviewed various discussions."
He mentioned expanding cooperation between Korea and Kazakhstan, stating, "We understand that cooperation will be carried out in trade, politics, and various fields such as Korea's advanced technology and industry, and Korea is a leading country in these areas." He also emphasized that Korean conglomerates such as Samsung, Lotte, and POSCO are investing in Kazakhstan, saying, "We aim to make these indicators (investments) more active in the future," and "Rather than raw materials, the goal is to diversify the economy by exchanging parts between the two countries, and we will prepare conditions for introducing Korea's advanced technology to Kazakhstan."
