According to the Jeju Coast Guard, at around 8:37 a.m. on the 16th, a report was received about a dolphin carcass on the rocky shore near Aewol Coastal Road in Gueom-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju City. The patrol team from Hallim Police Substation arrived at the scene at around 9:11 a.m. and found a dead fish on the rocky shore.
The Hallim Police Substation patrol team of the Jeju Coast Guard confirmed that the discovered fish differed somewhat in appearance from typical dolphin species. To accurately identify the species, they consulted Professor Kim Byungyeop of Jeju National University and confirmed it was a yellowtail (family Carangidae, order Perciformes) measuring approximately 150 cm in length, 84 cm in girth, and weighing about 25 kg.
Meanwhile, the giant yellowtail found this time is smaller compared to the largest Korean fishing catch of 161 cm caught in Jeollanam-do last February, but it is a size rarely found. It is presumed to have been drifting to the rocky shore and found dead while staying near the coast during the spawning season.
