[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The governments of Korea and Mexico have agreed to mutually cooperate for the successful advancement of the 'Dos Bocas Refinery Construction Project,' a key national project in Mexico currently involving Korean companies.
On the 13th, Minister Moon Seung-wook of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in the energy and resources sector during a meeting with Rocio Nahle Garcia, Mexico's Minister of Energy, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul.
At the meeting, Minister Moon emphasized that the Korean government has been actively pursuing energy transition policies to shift the energy system from fossil fuel-based to clean energy-centered. Furthermore, to participate in global climate crisis response, Korea declared carbon neutrality by 2050 at the end of last year and plans to establish a 2050 carbon neutrality scenario, further raise the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, and prepare detailed implementation strategies for sectors such as industry, transportation, and energy within this year.
Minister Moon stated, "Responding to climate change and achieving carbon neutrality is a formidable task that cannot be accomplished by the efforts of a single country alone; international cooperation and collaboration are essential." He added, "Korea and Mexico need to further strengthen cooperation in a future-oriented and mutually beneficial direction."
To this end, Minister Moon proposed advancing detailed practical discussions in the second half of this year to expand the existing 'Korea-Mexico Resource Cooperation Committee' to the 'Industrial Resources Cooperation Committee' ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year.
On this day, both countries shared mutually beneficial cooperation achievements such as Korean companies' investments in local energy facilities in Mexico and agreed to make efforts to resolve and support corporate difficulties, including visa issuance, to ensure smooth progress of Korean companies' investments and businesses in Mexico.
