[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Murim Paper, a leading eco-friendly paper company in Korea, has won the prestigious honor of being named the '2021 Korea Green Product of the Year' in three categories chosen by consumers.
Three products ? Neofore Cup, Neofore Straw, and Neofore Cushioning Material ? were simultaneously selected as green products, marking the first time a domestic paper manufacturer has achieved a triple crown.
The 'Green Product of the Year' is a highly credible eco-friendly contest in which environmental organizations and consumers participate directly from candidate selection to voting. Organized by the nonprofit civic group Green Purchasing Network, every year nationwide consumer and environmental organizations and consumer evaluation panels test the products firsthand, assessing environmental performance, functionality, and economic feasibility before voting to select the final green products of the year.
The Murim products that achieved the triple crown received high marks for replacing conventional plastics and vinyl with eco-friendly paper, contributing to environmental preservation and resource circulation. In particular, these three products are known as Murim’s representative 'eco-friendly paper trio,' a gem in the domestic paper industry that has set various eco-friendly records.
The paper cup base material 'Neofore Cup' uses an eco-friendly water-based coating that biodegrades within 45 days underground, making it a leading eco-friendly paper. Its eco-friendliness has been verified through supply to convenience stores and large supermarkets.
The paper base material for straws made from natural pulp, 'Neofore Straw,' has passed all eco-friendly tests and obtained both biodegradability and recyclability certifications. Murim is the only domestic paper manufacturer producing paper straw base material to have acquired both certifications. It offers superior durability with no deformation over extended use, improves the mouthfeel for users, and has passed safety tests by the U.S. FDA and Europe’s BfR.
'Neofore Cushioning Material' is the base paper used to produce paper cushioning materials. While styrofoam, plastic, and vinyl (commonly known as bubble wrap) are generally used as cushioning materials to prevent damage during parcel delivery, paper cushioning material is an air-inflated paper cushion designed to absorb shocks and holds patents. Each cushioning piece is about 7 cm, palm-sized, weighs only 1.6 g, yet has the durability to easily withstand the weight of a sack of rice. Recognized for its outstanding durability and eco-friendliness, it won the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology President’s Award at the 15th Korea Packaging Exhibition and is currently used for some shipments from CJ Logistics’ Baegam Distribution Center.

Through this award, Murim has recognized consumers’ strong interest and demand for eco-friendliness and plans to continuously develop new and diverse paper products that can be applied as alternatives in daily life, leading the eco-friendly paper market.
