Ministry of Justice Decides on 'Parole' for Lee Jae-yong with Probation... Reporting Required for Long Trips
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who will be released on parole on the 13th, will be under probation supervision by the Ministry of Justice.
The Suwon Probation Review Committee of the Ministry of Justice, which has jurisdiction over the Seoul Detention Center where Lee is incarcerated, held a closed meeting on the 11th and decided to place Lee and other parolees under probation supervision.
According to the Criminal Act and the "Act on Probation, etc.," parolees are generally subject to probation supervision. Only in exceptional cases, such as seriously ill patients, elderly persons, or foreigners scheduled for deportation, is probation supervision waived.
After parole, Lee must report in advance to the probation officer if he changes his residence or travels domestically or abroad for more than a month.
The Ministry of Justice stated, "Parole probation is a conditional release before completing the full sentence, requiring the parolee to maintain good conduct and comply with certain conditions," and added, "We will operate the probation system well to help parolees adapt to society healthily without reoffending."
