Lee Jae-myung "Yoon Seok-yeol, Regrettable Perception of the Establishment Ignoring and Disregarding the People"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Gyeonggi Province Governor and Democratic Party presidential primary candidate, promised to definitely win against the shamelessness of ignoring and disregarding the public, criticizing the entrenched elite in our society, represented by Yoon Seok-yeol, for their truly deplorable perception of ordinary citizens.
On the 11th, Lee posted on Facebook an article titled "Why are there so many Yoon Seok-yeols in our society?" introducing remarks made by candidate Yoon Seok-yeol and the head of the economic policy division of his campaign.
The text introduced by Lee is as follows.
"Regarding substandard food, those who have nothing should be able to choose even lower quality options and eat them more cheaply."
"Pouring endless water into a bottomless jar is a problem, but creating a situation where people might not repay money is truly bad policy... Do not distort the issue with baseless wordplay."
Lee said, "(The above statements) were recently made by candidate Yoon Seok-yeol and the head of the economic policy division of Yoon's campaign," adding, "How can their perspective on people, their attitude toward the vulnerable, and their commitment to the nation's responsibilities be so different from mine? Beyond being appalled by the inhumane and irrational thinking of the entrenched elite in our society, I even feel a sense of despair."
He further criticized, "The phrase 'freedom to choose substandard food' mentioned by Yoon's side is truly absurd and outrageous."
He also said, "An annual average interest rate of 401%, 1000% is not a story from another universe but the illegal loan interest rates announced by the Korea Financial Loan Association and the Financial Supervisory Service," and questioned, "Where can you see the 'freedom' that candidate Yoon or his campaign talks about here? To me, this desperate struggle that looks like a 'last gasp for survival'?does candidate Yoon see it as 'freedom of choice'?"
He then shared stories from his childhood.
Lee said, "When I was young, I did not feel free eating rotten fruit my father picked up, nor did I feel free working as a low-wage child laborer because I couldn't afford the 7,000 won tuition for the qualification exam academy," adding, "In despair, eating fresh fruit to my heart's content and attending school in a uniform without worrying about money were just dreams."
Furthermore, he said, "South Korea has now become a globally recognized advanced country, and shouldn't such a country bear corresponding responsibilities?" He asked, "Isn't it the responsibility of a modern welfare state to provide citizens with the freedom not to have to buy substandard food or knock on the doors of murderous high-interest illegal loan sharks?"
He also stated, "During the IMF crisis and the global financial crisis, it was not our citizens who received tens of trillions of won in policy funds at low interest rates and failed to repay them. If we worry about 'moral hazard,' the blame should be directed at large corporations and the entrenched elite," and lamented, "The perception of the entrenched elite in our society, represented by Yoon Seok-yeol, is worrisome."
He continued, "The Songpa three mothers family who had to end their lives because they lacked 300,000 won a month, large corporations that still operate proudly without repaying tens of trillions of won of public funds?who should the state protect and be responsible for?" He criticized, "The market fundamentalism and jungle capitalism disguised as fairness are shameful."
