Ulsan City Appointed Chair of the 'Northeast Asia Local Governments UN' Association of Local Governments
Unanimous Approval by Member Organizations at Online General Assembly on the 10th
Serving as Leaders of 79 Regional Governments in 6 Northeast Asian Countries
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan City will serve as the chair of the Association of North East Asia Regional Government (NEAR) and lead international exchanges and cooperation among local governments in Northeast Asia for two years.
On the 10th at 3 p.m., Ulsan City was unanimously approved as the 14th chair at the 13th NEAR online general meeting hosted by the Sakha Republic of Russia, the 13th chair organization, attended by representatives including governors from 73 local governments across five Northeast Asian countries.
Accordingly, Ulsan City plans to hold a working committee meeting in 2022 and a general meeting in 2023.
While serving as the chair organization, Ulsan City plans to enhance the status of Ulsan's urban brand and expand opportunities for exchange, cooperation, and mutual growth in various fields such as economy and trade, education and science, and culture and tourism.
Song Cheol-ho, Mayor of Ulsan City, introduced Ulsan as the industrial capital that has led South Korea's economic growth and stated in his acceptance speech, "Amid broad and sweeping changes of the era, Northeast Asian local governments will proactively respond to global issues and seek ways to secure future competitiveness."
Kim Ok-chae, Secretary-General of the NEAR Secretariat, said, "With Ulsan City taking on the chairmanship, it will be able to efficiently promote Ulsan's appeal to member organizations from six countries, and it is expected to give momentum to the northern economic cooperation that the city is focusing on."
The Association of North East Asia Regional Government was established in 1996 as a multilateral exchange platform among local governments in Northeast Asia, initially with 29 metropolitan local governments from four countries (South Korea, China, Japan, Russia), and currently includes 79 metropolitan local governments from six Northeast Asian countries. It is regarded as the "United Nations of Northeast Asian local governments."

The NEAR Youth Drawing and Poster Contest has been ongoing since April, and the winning works from past contests will be exhibited at the Ulsan Library from September 7 to 17.
