LG Electronics Expands 'LG Channel' Service... "Offering 1,900 Channels in 25 Countries by Year-End"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] LG Electronics announced on the 10th that it will significantly expand the LG Channels service, a free content platform pre-installed on webOS TVs. LG Channels is a service that allows users to watch multiple channels for free on webOS TVs connected to the internet without a separate set-top box.
LG Electronics plans to launch the LG Channels service in 11 additional European countries, including the Netherlands and Switzerland, within this year. Currently, the service offers over 1,600 channels in 14 countries, and it will expand to 25 countries with about 1,900 channels. In South Korea, 144 free channels are currently available through LG Channels.
Additionally, LG Electronics has increased the number of countries offering K-content channels on LG Channels from 4 European countries to a total of 8 by adding 4 countries in the Americas. Recently, in collaboration with content partner New ID, K-content channels such as YG TV, a live TV channel from YG Entertainment, and New K-Movies, a Korean film specialty channel, were added to LG Channels in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico.
In Europe and Latin America, popular channels favored by local consumers, including channels from well-known content providers like Pluto TV and Rakuten TV, as well as Quest TV, a jazz and electro music streaming service, will also be added.
Furthermore, LG Electronics plans to update the software within the year to enable LG Channels to be used on TVs from external manufacturers that use the webOS platform. Currently, over 20 TV manufacturers worldwide have released TVs using the webOS platform. LG Electronics will also apply a new user interface (UI) that enhances content recommendation functions based on customer preferences. The new UI has already been updated on TVs released last year, and update services will be provided next month for models released since 2016.
